The lack of workers in Kosovo as a result of the migration of young people is forcing private sector to hire retirees. At least, that’s what the chairman of the Independent Union of the Private Sector, Jusuf Azemi, said. He added that the government is not creating proper conditions for young people in Kosovo, thus workers have lost their will and security and the only direction they see is to fly away as soon as possible.
The Independent Union of the Private Sector had warned as early as five years ago that there will be a shortage of workers in Kosovo as a result of the low payment by employers in Kosovo.
The Chairman of the Independent Union of the Private Sector, Jusuf Azemi, has said that in many companies they have visited, they have seen retired people working. According to him, this is due to the lack of workers because young people have migrated abroad for better opportunities.
“A symbolic salary increase has been made, for which we are not satisfied because inflation dictates that the minimum salary should be at least 500 euros. The companies are increasing them now due to the lack of workers and they are trying to entice the workers as much as possible so that they have security for the work they perform”, Azemi emphasized.
He added that from the post-war period until now, not a single government has paid enough attention to the implementation of laws related to employer-employee relations.
“We told the Government of Kosovo to make a mini-program, to come out together and offer better conditions to private sector workers in Kosovo and that the minimum wage to be 500 euros and at the same time have strict supervision by the inspectorate and union. For now, even if the companies offer 1,000 euros to the workers, they have lost their will and security and the only direction they see is to fly away as soon as possible”, added Azemi.
Petrit Reqica, from the Association of Gastronomists, says that the lack of workers has been noticed since before the pandemic, and now there is, even more, a low number of them, even though wages have increased.
